Dr. Griffin is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley where he received bachelor, masters, and optometric degrees. After graduation in 1958 he served in the U.S. Army in the Medical Service Corps, called in twice, for four years. Afterwards, he worked in public health in Washington, D.C. on epidemiological surveys. While there, he attended national meetings of highway engineers and renewed interest in vision of motorists relating to signage and safety issues. Returning to California in 1963, he practiced optometry and joined the faculty of the Southern California College of Optometry in 1969. Dr. Griffin was awarded in 2002 the title, Distinguished Professor Emeritus. He earned a masters degree in higher education from the University of Southern California in 1976. He has served on a consulting team for the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles, studying vision standards. Dr. Griffin has done research and has served as consultant to attorneys in which vision requirements of motorists were at issue as well as issues of restrictive codes for signage of business establishments. He has authored or co-authored more than ten books and several chapters in other books as well as over 100 articles in professional journals, many of which involve research on readability.
Dyslexia is an anomaly separate and distinct from other reading difficulties. It affects 10% to 20% of school children and is present in many older individuals in literacy programs.
